McAlester High School Band

Directed by David Steidley

The McAlester High School Band is the flagship of the band program.   This ensemble meets first hour everyday. The marching band performs at every football game and competes during the fall at several marching band competitions. Such competitions are the Oklahoma Band Masters Association and the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Association State Contest.  During the fall, students also have opportunities to tryout out the South Eastern Band Directors Association Honor Bands as well as the Oklahoma Music Educators Association All-State Band.

Once Marching Season is over, auditions are held and the high school band is divided into two concerts bands (Wind Ensemble and Concert Band). Both bands meet during first hour. The Wind Ensemble works to complete the effort for a State Title by competing in the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Association Concert and Sight-Reading contest. A school must earn Superior Ratings in Marching, Concert, and Sight-Reading to earn the state Sweepstakes title.   The concert band during the spring works on music for community and public relations concerts. They continue to work on musical techniques and skills, as well as provide pop and fun music for concerts around our community.

Students in High School band have the opportunities to be part of: Steel Drums, Jazz Band, Woodwind Choir, String Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Color Guard, Percussion Ensemble, Broadway Band, and Basketball Band.  Most of these extra groups meet after school, but String Ensemble meets during 8th hour.  The High School band can be seen twice a year in public concerts at their Christmas Concert and Spring Concert, and travels every two years for out of state performances(recent trips: Williamsburg, Virginia; Orlando, Florida; San Antonio, Texas; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois).
