This is the most important group in the McAlester Band Program. This is the only opportunity to start in band and students whom do not start in sixth grade do not get to join later. Band is a cumulative activity, meaning it gradually builds on itself as students go through band, to come into band after sixth grade is like jumping to Spanish 2 or 3 with out Spanish 1.

We begin the year by testing the students for musical aptitude and also test the students by trying them out on each of the six instruments we start (Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Percussion). Once we have evaluated the students we make a recommendation for the instrument they would be most successful with and also maintain a balance of instrumentation.

The sixth graders are divided up into four classes for most of the year: Mr. Steidley, Clarinet, Ms. Blue - Flute; Mr. Price - Trumpet and Trombone; Mr. DeNike - Percussion.

Students in this group perform for the public at their Winter and Spring concerts. At the end of the year, this group is rewarded for their hard work and commitment by going to the Sandylake Music Festival in Dallas, TX. This is a fun filled day that includes a chance to compete against other bands, food and riding rides at the Sandylake Amusement Park.
